Despite severe sanctions; Iran unveils advanced homegrown air traffic radar at Abadan airport

Iran has deployed an advanced domestically built air traffic radar system at Abadan airport. The MSSR-Mode S radar strengthens air traffic control and marks a step toward self-sufficiency. The country continues to develop its aviation sector despite US sanctions.

AhlulBayt News Agency: Iran has unveiled an advanced homegrown air traffic radar system amid foreign sanctions targeting its civil aviation sector.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, via video link, ordered the deployment of the MSSR-Mode S radar system at Abadan airport in southwest Iran. Authorities from the Iranian transportation ministry stated that the radar would enhance the region’s air traffic control network.

Mohammad Amirani, CEO of Iran Airports and Air Navigation Company, announced that the monopulse secondary surveillance radar system was entirely designed and built by domestic companies. Scientists from Isfahan University of Technology contributed to the project.

The radar system is capable of monitoring domestic and international flights within a 450-kilometer radius. Amirani noted that the government spent approximately 6.9 million euros ($7.84 million) on the project, saving nearly 1 million euros in import costs.

Officials view the radar’s deployment as a significant step toward self-sufficiency and progress in Iran’s aviation industry. The country has intensified efforts to maintain and develop its aviation sector despite US sanctions restricting access to foreign technology and investment.

Reports indicate that domestic firms have repaired more than a dozen planes grounded due to sanctions. Iranian companies have also been providing overhaul and inspection services to foreign airlines.

Iranian aviation authorities announced in late 2024 that the country had mastered the technology required to manufacture spare parts for Boeing and Airbus jet engines.
